LAST WORD

LAST WORDS FOR ADVENT 2019

During Advent we think about the coming of Jesus amongst us again. That first Christmas He came as a helpless baby- boy, grew to be a man and gave His life for us. He rose from death and gave us the gift of His Holy Spirit, to enable us to continue His work on earth and so that He can be seen alive in His world today through our actions and treatment of others.

We are told to be constantly on the lookout for signs of His return because no one knows when it will be, and we must always be prepared for that time by serving Him in our lives in the role for which we have been chosen.

Will Jesus return this Christmas 2019 and if He does, will we recognise Him? Will He be a baby again, a king, a politician a priest or perhaps, one of the poorest of the poor? We just don’t know.

Perhaps He is already here, and we’ve missed Him? His own people did not recognise Him when He lived amongst them. They were blinded by their idea of the Messiah they thought He would be and the kind thy wanted.

We don’t need to be afraid, just prepared by listening to what Jesus said and every day following His example given us in the scriptures.

In Matt. 25- 37, we read this: ’the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Amongst such as these perhaps we should be looking for Him. That dirty, man in the street we crossed over the road to avoid, the strange person who came to church one day who made us feel uncomfortable and ignored, that woman who is irritating us by constantly quoting the scriptures at us, the person with aids who started working with us,  was one of these Jesus?

Let me end on a lighter note. A young curate rushed into the vestry shaking with fear and said to His vicar, “Have you heard the news, Jesus is returning tomorrow! What are we going to do?” “Don’t worry my son, said the wise elderly priest, just look busy!”

Advent Blessings, Sr. Marian.
