LAST WORD

November 17th. 2019

This Sunday is ‘Prisoners Sunday and week’.

Prisoners’ Sunday marks the first day of the ecumenical Prisons Week, a week of prayer which has been raising awareness of issues faced by those affected by the criminal justice system. It was founded by Bishop Victor Guazzelli in 1975. For over forty years Prisons Week has prepared prayer literature to enable the Christian community to pray for the needs of all those affected by prisons: prisoners and their families, victims of crime and their communities, those working in the in the criminal justice system and the many people who are involved in caring for those affected by crime on the inside and outside of prisons.

There are however manty different kinds of prisoners. We have Prisoners of Conscience, who are imprisoned for their faith refusing to denounce their love of Jesus and facing torture, isolation and all kinds of mental torment. It is hard to think that this still goes on today. Many stories are told by survivors about their experiences. These people live out the fact that being a Christian still can mean suffering, torture and death. They all need our prayers and for us in any way we can to show them they are not forgotten.

We speak of some as having an imprisonment of the soul.  They are trapped in past situations which stop them from developing in the faith. Often those who have been deeply hurt or abused feel anger, resentment, the need for revenge, guilt, self-loathing and can be defensive and short with other people because they expect to be hurt again. Unless they are released from the past they cannot move on in their spiritual and social life. They need what we call, ‘The Healing of the Memories’.

Then we have so many who are imprisoned through disability. They are imprisoned in their own bodies.

All these ‘prisoners’ need healing in one kind or another and in some ways, we are all affected. Most of us have issues from our pasts that we won’t let go. All of us need to be released by the accepting love, forgiveness and healing of Jesus through His Holy Spirit.

I do know that often the greatest healing is given simply by offering love and acceptance and the willingness to listen and to let people know they matter no matter who they are or what they have done.

Criminals may not change but at least we can bring them in our prayers to our heavenly Father.

For all of us forgiveness is an essential part of healing and helping others, and ourselves to change.

Many Blessings,

    Sr. Marian.
